Summary translations of SHK’s KBS Guerilla Street Date Interview (20/01/2012)

This is one fun SHK interview with emphasis on his love  style & preferrence. SHK throughout the interview is pleasant, kind, honest with his trademark infectious shy smile.

 SHK showed up on KBS Guerilla Date, talked of his ideal type. When asked if he felt his enormous popularity, SHK replied very shyly that he didn’t feel it at all during production of BRAIN. When asked about him winning the KBS Dae Sang, SHK said it was like a very nice short dream because he was making BRAIN till the last moment, he attended the award ceremony, then went straight back to the BRAIN drama set. SHK gave a hug to a fan and gave away small bags with his personal signature inside to fans driving the crowds to frenzy mode, resulting in temporary interuption to the interview. One fan shouted out, “Please don’t get married” which made SHK taken aback for a moment. After moving into a small cafe, SHK was told that he is famous for not having any specific ideal type and to be more specific this time. SHK replied very shyly that he really doesn’t have any. When asked between 165cm or 169 cm, SHK replied 168 cm quickly. The interview was conducted in multiple choice format in which SHK was asked several questions on his ideal type female. On Thick vs Light make-up, SHK replied “just right amout” ; On Profesisonal vs housewife SHK replied ‘Professional woman then a house wife after marriage would be nice”; On Mini skirt vs One piece dress SHK replied ‘ I just ike pants’On How much Beautiful SHK replied “Not ugly but not too beautiful”; On 20′s or 30′s (age) SHK replied ‘Age is not a factor’.

Overall, SHK gave out nothing specific and kept repeating ‘just about”in his answers making the reporter taken aback for a moment.

In Summary, SHK’s ideal type can be any average females.

Shin Ha Kyun, can you please SING TO ME?! I keep humming this song with the image of you singing etched FIRMLY in my mind! Cannot get it out of my head no matter how I try. :/ What more godly things can you do? Try me please?

Apart from the fact that I thought it was so out of character and uncharacteristically romantic of Dr. Lee to sing (and to sing it to YJH, can you believe it?!!! After all the yelling and screaming and belittling?), I actually NEARLY cried. T___T Not just because I was moved by Dr. Lee sudden display of sincerity, but also because I was touched by Shin Ha Kyun’s voice. The tenderness and softness within, the lingering tears in his eyes…. omg, how is this even possible? I’m a crybaby alright, but I never cry just listening to a song (usually my tears fall when I listen to the song along with the MV or certain scenes in sight). But WTH, this version of “Sad Letter” (OST from his buddy Song Kang Ho’s hit film “Memories of Murder”) by SHK totally got to me! >_< It’s been on repeat ever since last night, and every time he starts singing (when I replay it over and over), I want to CRY! No serious JOKE!

So yes, I already know the ending. I’ve already seen the cut of the finale last night and am totally fine with how it ended, surprisingly. What better than to have Dr. Lee achieve his goals and dreams and to have his loved one witness his grand moment in smiles and tears? [Totally reminds me of Nodame Cantabile's ending which I loved.] I can ask for no more.

I haven’t seen the finale in full yet, so I’ll probably dedicate an entry to that later on. But ahhhh…Brain has finally ended for good. Though I’d expressed my gripes and qualms regarding the flow and writing of the drama (which most Brainy fans may not agree with me on I guess hehe, but sometimes I do get a bit too critical when I watch TOO MANY dramas at the same time, please dun mind!), there isn’t a single doubt in my mind, that SHK had carried the show on his shoulders, from beginning to the end. With his earnestness, his charisma, his professionalism, his passion… all because of his dedication to his craft, we were able to find all sorts of wonders in this actor.

So before I bid farewell to the drama, here’s my final “Sad Letter” to Shin Ha Kyun, the body, heart and soul of Brain:

I am going to miss Dr. Lee Kang Hoon for sure, but amidst farewell, another gate is waiting to be opened. I’m sure SHK will be back soon! HWAITING!

李佳薇 Jess Li WHO?!! I’m sure most of you have never heard of her, have no idea who she is, and probably do not care. haha.

But if you guys want to have a go or listen at the voice of one of Malaysia/Taiwan’s most promising singers right now, you MUST not miss out on this girl.  The 24-year old Malaysian emerged No. 1 @ Taiwan’s most popular singing competition 超級星光大道7  One Million Star Class 7 last year, breaking a record history of being the only contestant in the competition to have reached a full score of 30 FOUR consecutive times for each song she delivered. I’ve seen her sing in the competition, and I definitely can vouch for her singing capability. She is just WOW.  She has wonderful and extremely promising singing range (she can go from really low to REALLY HIGH), captivating stage charisma and most importantly, a voice capable of piercing through hearts.

I heard this song Suffering 煎熬 on local radio for the first time yesterday (apparently she’d released her first album last year itself and this song was her first single), and was totally blown away by her voice. Her ability to switch from low to high pitch is just 0___0. If marketed properly, she can be HUGE!

Here I’ve embedded 2 different versions of her MV for the song. One so befitting of the lyrics and message the song intends to convey. Very honest. And doesn’t shy away from depicting how love can be so brutal and painful in RL.

** BUT PLEASE BEWARE: This MV is extremely discomforting, and at times disgusting. It also contains numerous controversial and visually explicit scenes which may turn you off immensely (and I mean immensely). If you’re not comfortable with gross scenes, you may want to stick with the song version (which I will add in as well), but if you want to experience the pain and suffering of love (I believe some people may have been through this), you may want to stick through the MV.

The original MV was banned in TW while the edited version received complaints for over-emphasis on sexual/explicit scenes. Even I did not expect such scenes to be shown in an MV o_0 definitely shouldn’t be available for kids’ viewing.

The disgusting stuff aside, I do think the MV reflected how agonizing it can be for some people to experience abandonment in the most extreme or brutal ways. Some people cry themselves to emptiness, some leave their souls to rot… In essence, the MV tells us, no matter how bad, one has to pick up and move on with life afresh. Do not ever give in blind to suffering.

I don’t know about you. But tho I’ve never experienced something like that before, I certainly felt the pain the girl felt in the MV thru Jess’s voice. It really grabbed my heart from within and squished it. I don’t think I’d ever want to go thru such a phase in life.

Yes, I am just that in love with this man. (Nope not Go Soo, sorry, he’s hot but my eyes are all on the man on the left ONLY.)

I can’t do a day without him.

People have been raving overwhelmingly about his suaveness and cockiness as Dr. Lee in BRAIN as of recent, but I find myself slowly falling for the shy, smiley and introvert side of him. He REALLY is that shy a person, IMAGINE. It’s quite unimaginable. He played a mute killer/assassin (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance & No Mercy For Rude), mad/retarded man (Save the Green Planet, Thirst), sex pervert (Foxy Festival), a nice smiley sweet guy (Harvest Villa) and a righteous patriotic man (Welcome to Dongmakgol and The Front Line)… he’s attempted pretty much all the non-conventional roles that you can think off your head, and in RL, he’s an introvert, doesn’t speak much, is so incredibly shy that you’d probably have to crack your head in order to initiate a good complete conversation with him.

Okay, I better zip up. You’re probably already fed up with my incessant and repetitive ramblings.

I know A LOT of people love the show, adore the brothers, want to claim Joo Won as theirs and are ardent fans of the Tae Hee-Jae Eun couple. Countless people have raved and rambled about how good and endearing the show is, and I totally agree. I love the family, love the relationships, the dynamics, the funny and all. It’s not the most original writing I’ve seen (family dramas tend to overdo the dramatic stuff a bit), but so far I’m OK with it, can live with the tropes and am totally in sync with whatever’s happening up till now. Tho I don’t rave about the show as much  (due to overload of dramas T_T), I still follow it very closely. I’m a lil bit behind as I watch the episodes on KBS World, but I make sure I stay home every Sat and Sun night just to catch OB. My friends are even complaining why I don’t go out anymore.

While most peepz are going GAGA over Joo Won (I love this lil puppy too) and his character TH and JE’s love story, I find myself even more invested in this other OTP – Tae Beom and Soo Young. Their interactions, their gradual development as a married couple, their growing feelings for each other…etc.  Contract marriage in K-drama, it’s like the most rehashed concept EVER, it never never gets old! I hate the fact that they can’t come out with newer ideas, but you know what? I hate myself even more for loving such relationships in dramas – where 2 people come together without knowing each other, and gradually grow fonder of each other as time passes.

It’s the same thing with TB and SY, if you get what I mean. There isn’t anything original about the way their relationship is written, it’s so predictable. For some reason, I just love seeing their parts  the most when I tune in. When they bicker, I giggle like mad. When they argue, I have the time of my life. When they’re mushy or lovey dovey with each other, I swoon like a mad romantic. And when they go angsty, tears automatically form in my eyes. Of course, I adore the brothers are their respective OTPs as well (surprisingly the writer does a great job by balancing out their screen time), but when it comes to shipping any particularly OTP, TB-SY takes the cake. Their sizzling chemistry. The electrifying sparks when they’re in a scene. The others pose no contention at all IMO.

I have to give props to Ryu Soo Young and Choi Jung Yoon for making TB-SY’s dynamics work so incredible well. They sync SO WELL for each other. If CJY didn’t get married just recently (while filming OB), I would have been shipping something in RL.  But perhaps that’s why CJY has never looked better. She looks prettier in OB, and has this ethereal glow in her in OB. A glow that I failed to see in her earlier drama Manny or her other dramas. Perhaps she’s working with a close oppa (they’d known each other since Bad Love, they worked together in the show but weren’t the OTP) so she’s comfortable with him. But either way, what I wanted to say, they RAWK.

I tried to find videos or fan-made vids of them on youtube, but failed. I guess they’re not as loved or well-received as the TH-JE OTP?

And you did not just make me gag myself in laughter for a whole one hour last night. Oh no you didn’t.

I haven’t seen MoonSun yet, so I’ll reserve judgment. But Wild Romance, it is SO MY CUP OF TEA HUMOR! I love it. It’s so deliriously madly stupid and comical I really can’t take it seriously lol. You know, it will probably be not as loved as MoonSun (sagueks usually draw big crowd watchers, and we all know how BIG Kim Soo Hyun and Jung Il Woo are), it may never be taken seriously, or may not beat History of Salaryman in terms of solidness of plot, but I love it. I LOVE IT SO MUCH ALREADY.

Yes, I’m one biased viewer. I love Wookie to death, and I love the writer even more for having penned few of my favorites in the past (the awesome awesome Alone In Love being on of them). But aside from those facts and the fact that I love comedy and quirk silly done good, it’s actually the surprisingly spot on Lee Shi Young whom I’m loving so much in here. She is so utterly WANJEON DAEBAK!~~

The OTP is love, has wonderful chemistry (it really does get me thinking, how does Wookie manage to do it every single time?) and most importantly, are EQUALS in terms of EQ lol. I love that they’re such hilarious duds together and individually. I also love how both of them spar each other with equal levels of wit and intelligence (being kinda low here LOL), physically and mentally. It’s just so FUN to watch. Wookie is going all out with his obnoxiously self-aware jerk-ass character Moo Yeol, and Lee Shi Young is nailing her character Eun Jae with utter perfection! I love them together <333

But what I love most about WR right now, is the execution and writing. WR may not have the most original storyline, in fact, it’s probably one of the most re-hashed boy-girl-bicker-fall-in-love plot of all time. But the writing of Park Yeon Seon shows, it’s there. Quirky, witty and fun all combined perfectly. It may be a bit lacking in terms of depth and subtlety (reminds me of his early My Tutor Friend), and may not appeal to some for the OTT-ness is portrays, but it’s not totally mindless or ridiculous. There’s just a genuine charm to all the humor and wackiness.

I know judging from Ep 1 alone doesn’t mean anything. Everything can go astray afterwards and I may drop it or whatever later on, but as for now, it’s just pure LOVE for me. More for WR! W000TTTT!~~~

I think 2012 is out to ruin me. It is going to ruin me so bad that I probably won’t have time for LIFE anymore (and not that I’d have enuff since ppl are predicting that we’re headed for doom this year aiks). Not only am I in a terribly sticky Shin Ha Kyun addiction, which ya know, is costing me half my personal life (searching for stuff about him online, videos, interviews and whatsoever relating to him), and isn’t waning anytime soon; I am also suffering from a severe overload of dramas. TOO MANY DRAMAS! >___<

Just to update, I have one episode to the end of Me Too Flower (meh drama, I really have no idea why I watched this in the first place, my vote for worst Kim Do Woo rom-com), 4 more episodes of Brain (oh how much I love you so Shin Ha Kyun ssi, but I can’t wait for you to end already; you’re getting overly repetitive and senseless *my BRAINY gals please don’t throw stones at me* ), am half-way thru Fermentation Family (love the writer and PD team, but FF isn’t quite what I’d expected from them; it’s visually attractive and mind-soothing alright, but it lacks the genius and intelligence that I’d seen in Mawang?) and just got started with Special Investigation Team TEN (very slickly executed first 2 episodes; the first case was just downright mind-blowingly twisted and unpredictable; whoever wrote it deserves a standing ovation o_0).

I am also looking forward to a slew of upcoming dramas, just to name a few: Wild Romance (no way I’m going to miss this, for the Wookie and Park Yeon Seon love, and for the crazy ahjumma-permish Lee Shi Young), MoonSun (which just premiered yesterday night, tell me how should I live with this?!!! OTTOKE?! Just by having to choose between Kim Soo Hyun and Jung Il Woo racks my brain, I am in serious shizz arrhhh…), Hanbando (not many know about this, but it’s a North-South Korea spy thriller starring Hwang Jung Min and Kim Jung Eun just in case you need to know), Fashion King (this just for Lee Je Hoon who surprised me with his fine acting in Bleak Night and Front Line; I know more will be tuning in for Yoo Ah In whom I adore as well, but if anything, it’s Lee Je Hoon FTW for me) and this new drama called Mask or something by Joo Won (ahhhh, my lovely puppy!) and the adorable Jung Yu Mi (from Thousand Days’ Promise).

And before I forget to mention, History of Salaryman!

Yes, I caught the first episode last night and I ALREADY LOVE IT! It has this really on your face exaggerated feel that you can’t help but just laugh out loud. The characters are all interesting, especially Lee Bum Soo’s Yoo Bang, Jung Kyeo Won’s Hang Woo and Jung Ryeo Won’s Yeo Ji. In spite of their vastly individualistic and unique personalities, when they come together in a scene, it’s total WHACK. Like TOTAL WHACK!!!

I knew it. Back when the trailer was released, there was so much frenzy about how out of the world it was, how over-the-top crazy it was that nobody knew what to make out of it. Other than the fact that I loved the the overall cast, I didn’t know what to expect from the drama.  I mean, what can you do with a drama theme focusing on salarymen?!!!

Nope I’m not much of a history person. I know and have heard of the names used for the characters in the drama, but if you ask me to connect who to who, or name who’s an ally of who, I can’t do any of that to save my life. That’s why drama is MY LIFE. Maybe I’d be able to link historical figures to the characters in here and picture how who’d fought with who in the past, who was whose lover and who’d lost…etc. Seriously, what better way? And what a great way too!

At this point, I’m not sure what the drama is trying to sell to us. It has a lot of stuff, from weird and unique leading characters, to corporate spies vying to steal some hotshot drug and to secret allies and conspiracy plots forged and plotted by some supporting characters etc. Though I have no single idea how they’re gonna link all these characters together, and how they’re gonna link them to the title – Salaryman, for sure I’m hooked and will continue watching.

All the actors are doing a fine job. They’re all very fitting to their characters, and already have good chemistry with each other (esp Lee Bum Soo and Jung Kyeo Won). I love Lee Bum Soo’s oddly clumsy and quirky character Yoo Bang the most out of the ensemble. The way he carries his clumsy and sometimes oblivious self is more than enough to get me into fits and giggles.  Although sometimes he does tend to overdo his expressions (bordering on too comical at times), I’m OK as long as I’m laughing enough.

Jung Ryeo Won is totally knocking everything out of the park with her character Yeo Ji. I love her already. I knew she had this spunk in her when watching her in the film Pain with Kwon Sang Woo where she played a homeless person who didn’t give a damn about what people thought about her. She was so fun to watch.  Her character here isn’t particularly new to us, kind of typical at most, the arrogant meanie girl who thinks she can have anything in the world in her hands. But she sinks into character very naturally and gives Yeo Ji a likeable charm altho she’s not a likeable character to many in the drama.

Jung Kyeo Won and Hong Soo Hyun are also doing a decent job with their characters. The latter hasn’t had time to shine yet but oh my Jung Kyeo Won, you hottie! If kaedejun or dodo hadn’t  claimed you way before this, I would have eaten you up in a go! <333 Your last drama bored me to death, but I am so so glad you made up by choosing a role that fits you to a tee~~~ not only do you look so damn dapper in the suits, you fit the Clark Kent specs perfectly and do that over-confident spy thingy like you’re a pro. If only Lee Bum Soo wasn’t lead and  I already love his character to bits, you’d be my sole reason to watch this.

History of Salaryman is written and directed by the Giant team, so I’ll be expecting some solid stuff aside from the zaniness and fun. I didn’t watch Giant in full, but have seen bits and pieces and heard enough to conclude that the writers are not ones to be messed with. They know their stuff well.

If anything, the new year is starting out to be pretty good so far, drama wise at least. I’ve also heard positive stuff about Wild Romance and MoonSun (the former’s wacky fun and the latter’s living up to the SKKS expectations I heard), so that’s one major PLUS. The one and only downside -  I have to split my schedule to cater to all these dramas. >__<

Life of life, you’ve just been ruined.

Korean drama is my LOVE. It’s been my source of entertainment and consolation (when I’m down) for a decade and a half now that there is no way I’d give up watching for anything else. But if there is anything capable of topping K-drama for me in any way, it would most definitely be Chungmuro – Korean Cinema.

I’ve seen quite a lot the past year, ranging from award winning films like The Man From No Where to box-office favorites like Sunny, The Bow: Ultimate Weapon and many many more. Loved some, liked some and generally enjoyed the lot that I’ve seen. I don’t know what it is about Korean cinema, I just find their films unusually intriguing, compelling and emotion evocative. I don’t need a handsome actor or a pretty girl to grace my screen, as long as it hooks me in, I’m all good. As long as it moves me, makes me laugh or smile to my heart’s  content and gets me into tears even at the randome-est of moments, I usually end up over-looking and doing away with the flaws and shortcomings. I’m just that easy to please. haha.

Last year offered us quite a batch of quality films, but to me, it’s this one film titled Bleak Night which made the best cut for me. A brutally honest film about friendship and its complications. A film about human insecurities. A film which made me re-think about how relationships can be so fragile and susceptible to rupture by unintentional words said or gestures done. A film which reminded me of my somewhat gloom memories in high school (I bet a lot of people have been thru such a phase).

This is not a full-length review, so no worries about me going into a long-winded and incessant frenzy over the film. I’ve done quite a bit of that in my Shin Ha Kyun posts, so I  digress. It also doesn’t help that this film also needs to be seen and felt.

This film may not appeal to the masses because of its title. Everything is pretty much portrayed in a greyish and bleak tone, and execution isn’t shown in the most flow-y fashion (with scenes going back and forth between flashbacks and current scenes). But in no way during my viewing of the film did I feel disjointed or disconnected in any way. I felt for the 3 main characters, their plights and inner struggles despite their grey-ish and shady characterizations. They made me wonder about how it felt to be insecure and lonely. They reminded me of my high school days  (I had such a period) which I would never want to revisit. It was painful and frustrating. And it’d cost me my confidence.  I’m glad I’ve moved on and past those days, but it does hurt to be reminded once in a while.

For those who want an honest depiction of friendship put to the test, this is the film for you. Those who want to have a taste of how insecurity can plague one’s confidence and self-worth, this film will show you bits and pieces of that. It is not for the faintest of hearts.

Direction by 29-year old newbie writer/director Yoon Sung Hyun will give you surprises, showing skills that you’d normally see from experienced and more well-known directors out there. Connecting abrupt flashback scenes and current scenes isn’t an easy feat (one may easily get lost ) but Director Yoon manages to overcome that and presents to us a unique look into adolescent complexities without undermining the flow of the story. But amongst all, it is the impeccable and convincing acting by the main leads Jo Sung Ha, Lee Je Hoon, Seo Jun Young and Park Jung Min which make the film for me. The carry their characters with such nuanced emotions that you can’t help but feel sorry and deeply for each of them. In particular, a noteworthy performance by Lee Je Hoon who plays the centric character Ki Tae in the film. The way he imbues a sense of desperation and weakness into his confident and dominant self (mostly shown in front of his friends), it’s amazing. Definitely a performance way superior to that of his in his most recent The Front Line.

I think Bleak Night needs to be watched with a prepared heart for discomfort (the sort which may remind some of you of some unwanted memories in high school), but also with an open heart, to accept that RL relationships aren’t always smooth sailing and as simple as we think or as we want it to be. The ending doesn’t offer us an exact conclusion to the happenings in the film, but nevertheless doesn’t feel cop out at all.

When times are bleak, and you feel so hopeless and lonely, it creeps up to you and haunts you.  Nothing is as easy as it seems.

It’s the very last day of 2011 today. Time flies huh?

The past year has been a fairly good one for me. It wasn’t mind-blowingly great or fun or anything, but it certainly gave me good laughs, meaningful experiences, and no doubt made me a better person. Tho I haven’t realised any of my past year dreams or resolutions (that is to get a man I want haha), I take pride and happiness in what I’ve done else-where, work wise, inter-personal relationship wise and of course, drama-watching wise. Had a good year of dramas, met new people, made good friends..etc. It was a satisfying and gratifying year. No complaints and no regrets.

So, I’ll cut things short. I wish all of you, my readers (those who read, comment or lurk around to look at pictures) a HAPPY & SNAPPY NEW YEAR 2012! May the new year bring all of us good luck, good health, happiness and most importantly, GOOD DRAMAS!~~
